When they first came back to the US (well, Gilad's first being here at all) they lived in my family's Brooklyn apartment for a while. Gilad was I guess maybe 3 at most (I was 5 or 6), and couldn't pronounce everything, so for a couple of years my name was Eena and my brother's was Yovav.

After Sue found an apartment, Mom sometimes took me there to visit while she'd go do errands. Sue considered Kool-Aid --the widest used beverage for kids back then-- as very poor nutrition, and preferred to use jello with about 3 times the amount of water for making gelatin dessert with. The lime was my favorite. To this day, anytime I have a sore throat, I make hot lime jello drink and remember them. Always have, probably always will.

I never knew Gilad.  My late father, Sue's eldest sibling Samuel Koenigberg, told me that Gilad's death decades earlier had motivated his own conversion to a fervent Zionism.  "Sue is alone now," he said.
Sue visited us in Eugene in the early 1980's.  Here, she enjoyed the Reconstructionist service, in what was then Eugene's only synagogue.  In 1999, she arranged our housing, and accompanied us a little, when my father took me and my wife and our sons on a three-week visit to Israel.  She was friendly, easy to get along with.

Please accept this small bit of memories I have, from Gilaad, and from Sue.

I remember Gilaad and I were sitting in Abba’s front room, and Gilaad was doing some homework at the slide out desk surface. This was during the year before he and Sue moved back to Israel, around the time of his Bar Mitzva. I noticed he was holding his notebook sideways, and he was writing with his left hand!  I was very excited, because up until then, I was the only left-handed grandchild I knew of, on both sides of the family!  Instant camaraderie!

In the school year of 1968-69, I was at Ulpana Kfar Pines, for 10th grade.  Every Tuesday afternoon we had the day off, and I would go traveling around Israel to visit friends and family.  On one occasion, I was at Sue’s house on Arlozorof, and Gilaad and I were fooling around on the piano, then he took me to a Tzofim meeting, where we sat around a medurah and sang songs, Gilaad playing his guitar.  That evening, there was a musical event with his Shevet, in some dusty, bare room with a little wooden stage, and Gilaad (keyboard) and his co-band members played and played, while everyone danced and sang.

Later, when I came on Aliya in ‘71, I visited Sue whenever I could, on chofesh from nursing school.  Sue introduced me to love apples, an Israeli tomato, new at that time, just the right size to pop into your mouth whole, which she served in one of her wonderful mismatched bowls.  I remember Sue and Gilaad standing on chairs in the living room, waving blankets and towels at the ceiling, to encourage the heat to come down from the very, very high ceiling-maybe 15 feet or more, and she explained that heat rises, because Sue always used every opportunity to teach.

When Gilaad did not come home from the war, all I could think about was Sue, alone in that cold room with the cathedral-height ceiling, trying to stay warm, without Gilaad to help her flap blankets.

I miss my gorgeous and talented, fun, brown cousin, and my stunningly beautiful and exotic aunt with the shining white hair and clever way of making a point, both of whom gave the world so much of their very special love.

My memories of Sue remain warm and rich even after the passage of time.  My home is dotted with some keepsakes from her home - menorah, wall hangings, fabrics (some were given to Sam and Muriel and ultimately came to me) - which make me smile every time I look at them.  Warm, understanding, easy to talk to, a superb listener and explainer - I couldn't have asked for more in an aunt/friend.
